{My desk feels complete again.}

Well guys. I have some news. I’m in a new relationship and though it’s less than a week old – I think I’m in love!  I won’t go into heavy detail about all the various “dates” and losers I had to sift through, the reminiscing about old times with my last love, and all the follow-up research and more dates I went on before I made the commitment, but I will say that as of right now, life is good.

Okay, silly metaphors aside – my first world problem is resolved and I couldn’t be happier about it. I bought a new laptop last weekend on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon, after spending the week before heavily researching what I wanted and figuring out how things have changed since I’ve been in the market for a new computer.  I’m starting to feel like everything is falling back into place. I struggled a lot with the MacBook Pro versus a higher-end PC and ultimately decided that cost would drive my decision, among important technical and aesthetic specifications and features that I was looking for.

The funny thing is that it’s been so long since I’ve had a new laptop – it’s been strange acclimating to all the fun new differences this one has (I forget that if I touch the screen it reacts – though I’m not sure why laptops with touchscreens are so hot right now anyway!?!). And while I won’t say that I absolutely hate it, because I don’t  – Windows 8 is an…adjustment.

With this dilemma behind me, I’m ready to move forward. I’m sure my boyfriend is too, who patiently listened to me talk about nothing but RAM, gigabytes, processors, touch screens, optical drives, screen size, MAC vs. PC, and battery life for a week straight – even happily taking my picture holding the box once I got it home. (Thanks Darlin’!)

Other highlights during the week were much more simplistic in nature. It’s beginning to feel a lot like fall in LA. I’ve been so stoked not only to feel the gradual shift in weather, but in all things turning pumpkin. Indulging in my first pumpkin spice latte of the season, rockin’ a pair of boots, and feeling the chilly draft in the air when waking up in the morning have been so invigorating after such a hot sticky summer. I was so happy about my latte – I kissed the cup 🙂

1-New folder (2)

The plan this weekend is to spend some time setting up my laptop and trying to crack the code of what the heck Windows 8 is trying to do. I’ll catch a film with my guy and run errands, you know, the usual. I think this a weekend to simply sit back, relax, enjoy the turning of the leaves, and be grateful that life really is good. Have an amazing weekend guys and Happy Fall!

Top 10 Films of Summer 2013

It’s been 5 days since the start of fall, and while the weather hasn’t made the complete shift from summer in L.A. – I can see it slowly pushing through. My air conditioner is being used less and less, I find myself wanting a sweater more often, and needing a blanket when I’m in the mood to be cozy on the couch at night. As we bid goodbye to long days of warm sunshine and the need to be around a consistent a/c source, I’m reflecting back on all things summer movies.

Though the calendar marks mid-June as the start of summer, it seems Hollywood drives when the season officially begins – the first weekend in May, releasing the first of many summer blockbusters to come for the next 3 months. I do like to indulge in many of the blockbusters, but I definitely make it a point to keep a strong connection to the smaller independent, foreign, and documentary films that also flood the market.

Let’s just say it was a busy summer. I can’t tell you how many collective hours I spent in the movie theater…well, I can. I’ve seen 28 films from May 3rd – September 21st (which I’ve deemed the end of the summer movie season for the purposes of this post, though some might argue the official “summer movie” season ended weeks ago).

It will be interesting to see how things shift as we move forward toward Oscar season where the best in cinema is yet to come.

Here are my top 10 films of the summer:

10. the great gatsby

MV5BMTkxNTk1ODcxNl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMDI1OTMzOQ@@._V1_SX214_

With many people (myself included), Baz Luhrmann can be a hit or a miss. (I loved Moulin Rouge, but had a hard time with Romeo & Juliet.) I think what one must understand when approaching his material is to expect fantasy, expect extravagance, over-indulgence, knowing that your suspension of disbelief is all part of the plan. In other words, just expect too much. I went into Gatsby thinking that I might not like the film because of the buzz it was getting around the industry, and the fact that it was 143 minutes instantly put me in the frame of mind ready to not like it. I was presently surprised. I found myself easily engrossed in the screen by a very charming Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby and Carrie Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan – their chemistry undeniable. Aside from such precise casting, one couldn’t help but fall into the too much. The lush 1920’s costume design, the decadent art direction, and witty writing made for an enjoyable 2.5 hour experience.

9. enough said

MV5BMjI2MjIwMDk2Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNTQ1MzQ5OQ@@._V1_SX214_

Part of the reason that I chose to end my summer movie review season just as the calendar officially turned to fall, was because I was so fond of this film that I wanted to give it a proper salute. It won’t be one of my top ten films of the year, but Julia Louis-Dreyus and James Gandolfini had me smiling (and I mean literally) for 1 hour and 40 minutes straight. The situation our protagonists find themselves in couldn’t be more “Hollywood,” full of coincidences that make for a great comedy that would be far from comedic if it happened in reality. What the film does well is not only maintain sincere humor along with depth to each and every character, but by not falling into a complete romantic comedy stereotype. What can I say? It’s a sweet film and an ever sweeter way to bid farewell to the very talented James Gandolfini. Enough said.

8. world war z

MV5BMTg0NTgxMjIxOF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMDM0MDY1OQ@@._V1_SX214_

I wasn’t expecting much from this film, and in fact, was going to skip it. Another zombie movie? After a culmination of good reviews, and the fact that it never hurts to spend 2 hours looking at Brad Pitt, I went in with a rather uncertain disposition, looking forward to another blockbuster flick. World War Z delivered. It’s naturally fun. It does a phenomenal job of building tension and taking the viewer into another world wrought with creative apocalyptic ingredients. I was completely taken in, thanking the films gods that the story got right to the point and didn’t let go until the end. I know that fans of the book were not so thrilled, but I didn’t read it. And in this case, it was probably a good thing.

7. 20 feet from stardom

MV5BMTQxNDY2NjMwNF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNzExMDg0OQ@@._V1_SX214_

Dreams lost, dreams found, dreams re-dreamed. 20 Feet From Stardom invitingly follows the unknown icons of the music industry. Those whose words we know better than the actual verse to a pop song because it’s the chorus that often sticks with us. And while it’s their lyrics and voices that melodically repeat in our heads when incessantly humming a tune, the spotlight is far from their reach. They are the background singers. They are literally steps away from the superstar, and are oftentimes more musically apt and vocally talented than the person at center stage. This touching documentary examines that 20 foot barrier that is nearly impossible to overcome. It takes a look into the lives of veteran and working background singers, whose only dream was and is the spotlight and their struggle to get there. What makes someone a star? As I walked away from this experience, I concluded that in many cases – almost all cases – simply having talent isn’t the answer.

6. the conjuring

MV5BMTM3NjA1NDMyMV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMDQzNDMzOQ@@._V1_SX214_

Four words come to mind when I think of this film: Holy. Awesome. Scary. Movie. In my book, when you’ve seen one scary movie, you’ve likely seen them all. Horror is a complicated genre to pull off and I’m not easily fooled. However, the delectable mixture of a well-crafted “based on a true story” tale, fueled by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson’s performance as paranormal investigators/real-life couple Ed and Lorraine Warren, The Conjuring did in fact get to me. I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the next scare as much as I was starting to believe that perhaps there may be some validity to paranormal activity, which I’ve always been rather ambivalent about. James Wan certainly has a talent for directing the dark side and has taken the horror genre to a fresh new level. To this day, the one horror film that admittedly did fool me was 2004’s Saw.

5. the way way back

MV5BNTU5ODk5NDg0Nl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNzQwMjI1OQ@@._V1_SX214_

There are those films that radiate a nostalgic feeling in such a way that no matter what happens along the journey you’re going to connect. I knew this would be one of those films about 5 minutes in. The Way Way Back endearingly depicts summer in a way that any person who has survived the complications of youth would understand. While circumstances differ in every person’s journey, many can relate to being young with 3 months of too much time on our hands, the weight of the world on our shoulders, and friction with our parents. Crafted in such a way that highlights equal amounts of humor and truth, while set in the alluring backdrop of Cape Cod, the film singlehandedly captures the epitome of all things summer, celebrating its uniqueness and doing so in a way that just takes you back.

4. fast 6

MV5BMTM3NTg2NDQzOF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNjc2NzQzOQ@@._V1_SX214_

Fast 6. You read that right. BY FAR, the most fun I had in a movie theater this summer was on Friday, May 24th at 8:00pm. Opening night at the Arclight in Hollywood found me among other like-minded hardcore fans of the race car driving franchise phenomenon! Pure adrenaline, completely cliché and ridiculous dialogue, along with even more ridiculous and unrealistic over-the-top action and stunt sequences had the entire audience cheering out loud. The icing on the cake was the surprise hello from Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and the entire Fast 6 cast in-person as the film credits rolled. I’m getting goosebumps just thinking about it again. It doesn’t get more popcorn summer blockbuster awesome movie fun than this! Yeah!

3. fruitvale station

MV5BMTQ0OTU1MDkxMF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNjI5OTA3OQ@@._V1_SX214_ (1)

Of all of the films I saw this summer – this was the only one that hit me in such a way that I couldn’t readily let go when I left the theater, sparking a need to really evaluate my thoughts on Oscar Grant’s story and the film that took on the complicated task of telling it. You can read my full analysis on what will likely be in my top 10 films of the year, Fruitvale Station, here.

2. blue jasmine

MV5BMTc0ODk5MzEyMV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMzI0MDY1OQ@@._V1_SX214_

As far as I’m concerned, the Best Actress Academy Award winner was chosen just as Cate Blanchett disturbingly makes her way to a park bench, sits down, and starts talking to herself, a completely and utterly broken soul at the end of Blue Jasmine. I know it’s early in the year to make this assertion as we approach awards season – but I would have a hard time being as convinced of a person’s mental breakdown unless it happened right in front of me. Simply put, Cate Blanchett’s performance made this film for me. Period. And though Woody Allen’s writing and direction are to be commended, along with excellent casting of supporting characters, I cannot say with confidence that I would have such esteem for this film if it weren’t for Blanchett’s extreme and consuming immersion into the instability she created in Jasmine.

1. before midnight

MV5BMjA5NzgxODE2NF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNTI1NTI0OQ@@._V1_SX214_

Before “Sunset” (2004) there was “Sunrise” (1995) just after “Midnight” (2013). If someone where to ever ask me what film has a sequel that is better than its predecessor, I would emphatically answer that I can now name two – and they’re both from the same series. I cannot think of another series of films that so eloquently depicts a nearly 20 year journey of the complexities when building an intimate relationship with another person.  These films have developed a formula, a narrative structure, and cinematic style that illicit a breath of fresh air every time. Before Midnight explores Jesse and Céline’s relationship 9 years after the last film now with 2 kids and the insecurities that come with finding your forever. I cannot find a better word to describe this film other than “poetic.” It never falls into deep cliches or loses an authentic connection to the viewer. I simply adore the dynamic of Jesse and Céline’s relationship; their intense connection abundant with humanity, open communication, and true friendship. It is that foundation that leads to some the best and most sophisticated dialogue I’ve ever heard on-screen, creating two of modern cinema’s best characters. While not impossible with three months left in the year, it would be very difficult to top this film as my favorite of 2013.

Farewell summer, hello Oscar season…

Fashion Hits & Misses: The Emmys 2013

I didn’t catch the Emmy broadcast or any of the live red carpet coverage this year; but boy, was I looking forward to checking out the fashion recaps online the next morning with my first soy pumpkin spice latte of the season!

Until I started sifting through the pictures and found that I was completely underwhelmed overall – by both what I was seeing and my now lukewarm latte at that point.

As I scrolled through all the high res images, nothing stood out to me as absolute “best dressed,” but it was hard to not feel this way when it came to “worst dressed.” There was plenty of “oh, she looks nice” but even more “OMG, I don’t quite know what she was thinking!” – followed by a not so nice, “fire your stylist!” Or perhaps that’s the issue and should be the opposite “for the love of god, hire a stylist!”

As I always say, it’s never easy dressing for award shows, knowing the entire world is scrutinizing every thread of fabric, every flicker of sparkle in a gem, and brush stroke of makeup across the face. I can only image the pressure (and lack of eating that happens up until 2 weeks prior). That’s why when I build these lists, I always note this caveat in my posts so as not seem completely mean-spirited. And while this likely negates that sentiment, the girls of “Girls” need some serious styling advice. HBO’s publicity department must be reeling right now.

Then there are those ladies that got it right and deserved every ounce of the spotlight.

Here are my top 5 fashion hits and misses.

Highlights

As the summer wraps up, at least according to the calendar this Sunday (though I’d give it a few more weeks before we’re in the clear from the next heat wave), I’m finding how ready I am for the change in seasons. Of course, sunshine is never too far away in L.A., but I’m terrified to see my next electric bill after a pretty consistent relationship with my air-conditioner at home over the last month.

This so-called last week of summer found me on a complete roller coaster.

Professionally, it’s been a pretty chaotic, but very productive work week – juggling many different projects happening worldwide; along with a happy highlight of spending some time on-set this week supervising the on-camera interviews we’re filming for a series of short documentaries. I’m finding that I love the diversity of the projects happening right now and I’m even more in love with the fact that my responsibilities are changing in a way that feels like growth (uber important to me at this time in my life when it comes my career).

Personally, since my laptop broke up with me last weekend, much of this week was filled with stressing out over researching my next move. It’s been a long time since I’ve had to get up to speed on the laptop market in a way that actually matters and, as expected, I’m overwhelmed with the thousands of options out there. Do I go Mac Book Pro or stick with a sleek and more affordable PC? What are my deal-breakers? (I’m just now catching on to how rare it is for a laptop to have an optical drive which I had in the deal breaker column…until yesterday – go figure). And more specifically, what do I need to do financially to shift around expenses to accommodate this unexpected break-up? I have a plan and everything will be okay in the end. While I know my last post spoke of this great revelation in a new perspective on stress – it still bugs me to have to deal with this right now, and therefore, still causes short spurts of it. (I know, I know.)

So I guess the universe decided to send me yet another message.

On Wednesday night after a much-needed yoga class – I sauntered home tired, thinking about computers, scrambling eggs for dinner, and mentally going through what I could watch in my Netflix queue to unwind some. Interestingly, nothing in my queue appealed to me so I started browsing and literally stumbled across the most life-affirming and moving documentary I’ve seen in a while – with a message that perhaps I needed to hear again, in another form, and even more intensely.

What drew me to the film was the unusual title, 65_RedRoses, and once I read the synopsis something pulled me to put it on among the thousands of other options in front of me.

65_RedRoses follows Eva Markvoort, an instantly lovable and highly spirited 23-year-old, whose lungs are failing from cystic fibrosis. The film enters her life during her difficult journey as she waits for a lung transplant, next on the donor list. Watching her struggle with simply breathing, something many of us take for granted, couldn’t be a more powerful way to shift perspective – not only in living life to the fullest, but in the importance of organ donation.

I had no idea how affected I would be by this film and by Eva’s story.

As soon as the film ended, I literally felt myself opening up and relaxing into a mixture of sadness and gratitude. The trivial stuff that I’d been allowing myself to be bothered by from work issues of the day to laptop worries seemed completely unnecessary, and in the grand scheme of things were and are completely fixable – therefore, unimportant.

What I’ve been thinking as I write these words is whether or not it’s a coincidence that the Oprah Winfrey Network logo was at the beginning of the documentary? I mean, twice in one week I’ve come across these messages (granted this type of stuff is very “Oprah”) that I can’t help but somehow interpret as the universe speaking to me, getting me to just relax and change my thinking and my approach.

Since this seems to be a recurring theme this week, I encourage you to see the film if you can. It’s streaming on Netflix and is available on Amazon Instant Video.

I was saddened to hear of Eva’s story, but I was grateful to have heard it. The tagline of the documentary I later found out is simple, yet profound; particularly because it’s literally true: Every breath counts.

With that, I’m entering the weekend with Eva and the universe’s message on my mind, my laptop worries a very distant second.

Have a wonderful weekend.

A New Perspective on Stress & A First World Problem

“What you resist persists.”

As the saying goes, the universe is always speaking to you. Yesterday afternoon in the midst of a little bout with stress, I came across this short clip, took a deep breath, and decided…ok, I get it.

This past weekend, I got some pretty bad news that I knew was likely coming, but still upset me when I took in the full weight of what was happening and what needed to happen next that I wasn’t prepared for.

A few days ago, my laptop officially gave out and broke up with me. As in, I was in my bathroom, unexpectedly heard this loud beeping noise over and over in the next room – and walked over to my desk to see my screen jumping repeatedly. I couldn’t stop it and it wouldn’t respond to any key strokes. I finally just turned it off, walked away thinking it needed “some rest” and would try starting it up again later. Well, it sure as heck is getting plenty of rest now, because it refuses to even boot up past the main screen.

Fast forward to the tech guy at Fry’s on Sunday, and apparently my motherboard has died.

I swear one of first things that crossed my mind was that episode on Sex and the City when Carrie’s beloved Mac laptop dies and she hadn’t heard of the concept of backing up her work, and then how completely freaked out (but comical) she was sitting in the repair shop waiting for the bad news. My reaction wasn’t freaking out – though I did curse myself for not backing up everything like I’ve been telling myself to do FOR YEARS…it was “great how in the hell am I going to be able to afford a new laptop right now?”

While I know that I had more than gotten my money’s worth out that laptop, along with a very healthy and lasting relationship of nearly 7 years, I’ve been stressed out because:

  1. Computers are not exactly considered a modern “luxury” anymore (especially given the industry I’m in and how the world works in general) so it’s not a question of if I replace it, but when I replace it.
  2. It’s difficult to call yourself a blogger without one.
  3. I wasn’t expecting this additional expense. (And this is the area I’m most stressed about.)

Admittedly, I realize that what I’m fretting about, while important to me at the moment, is still trivial if I step back and look at the big picture (or in this case, a complete first world problem). I have my health, a steady job, and therefore the means to figure out a solution – though I’m more fighting the urge and the acceptance of an additional expense to my budget, which I was really working hard to keep where it is, given that my rent increases next month. Talk about prefect timing for your computer to die, huh?

The fact remains that most people don’t get 7 years out of a laptop (and because I took great care of it – I should consider myself lucky I haven’t had to deal with it until now).  Luckily, my internal hard drive is likely okay, so I haven’t lost years of my digital life.

So what I take away from Eckhart Tolle’s words is to accept the situation, get out the mud of “why now?” and change it because I have to accept what is. A gal on the move in the 21st century like myself needs a working laptop.

Since I’m taking on this new perspective, I guess I should also be rather excited to be in the market for a new home computer. It’s been so long since I’ve had to buy one, that I’m sure this new laptop will blow my outdated device out of the water and I’ll betray every feeling I have right now about the expense when I’m like – “why didn’t I do this sooner?”

Bear with me over the next few weeks. I’ll be posting regularly, but if you don’t hear from me, it’s probably because I’m SO overwhelmed by the sheer volume of options in the laptop market while I research my next move, that I don’t want to be on a computer more than I have to be.

Just kidding…sort of. 🙂

My parting words to you: take a quick look at this short clip and see where and how you can change your perspective on that annoying, but very human thing we call stress. I know there’s someone out there who needs the universe to intervene at this exact moment and speak to you as well.

Highlights. In a New York State of Mind.

1-new-york-city-usa-1050x1680

Like every other gal aged 20 to 30-something in modern society with a fetish for adventures in the city (though mine happen to be in L.A.) and a lover of all things high fashion (of which I cannot possibly afford…yet) – I’ve always had this secret fantasy of having my version of a Carrie Bradshaw lifestyle. I realize that what I am about to say could not be more of a fantastical cliché, but allow me to indulge a bit – it is my blog and the only place where I can go off on a tangent. 🙂

I’ve said it time and time again – I’m a California girl at heart and will always be – mainly due to my total affection for warm sunshine nearly 360 days a year and the “illusioned” freedom of my car. I’m not at all a fan of sitting in traffic on the 405 every morning, but like every native Angeleno I do adore my transportation bubble complete with an iced latte and a fully updated iPod to help me get there…eventually.

However, I have a confession. It’s crossed my mind more than once what life might be like if I had this great rent-controlled apartment in New York City and met my 3 best gal pals channeling the likes of Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda for weekend brunches and cocktail hours to catch-up on girl talk. My closet would be full of more shoes than days in a year, and designer labels are all that would grace my perfectly sculpted back. My kitchen would be practically empty because I’d be eating out at all the hottest restaurants in the city every single night (hey, it’s my fantasy!). And I’d be a published writer with magical connections to get in anywhere, at any time; where you’d likely catch me cashing-in on said connections while getting a huge discount at Manolo Blahnik. Ah, the good life.

Where things would differ in my fantasy are that while I wouldn’t mind being an accomplished writer on the side (perhaps of the fictional variety), my main focus would be on producing independent and documentary films (I wouldn’t want to spend my time writing about relationships and sex for a living…sorry Carrie!). You can’t take the L.A. out of me completely.

So where did this sudden fantasy come from and why did I choose to share it as a Highlight from my week?

Enter New York Fashion Week.

I can’t say that I usually follow the shows all that closely, but I’ve been spending some time this week watching the live streaming feed of the runways – falling into the glitz, the buzz, and the excitement that seems to be vibrating around New York City right now. And though much of it is not necessarily something I or most people could wear from a practical standpoint (referring to when random components pop-off the material in such a way that you couldn’t possibly even sit down), I have been enjoying the artistic expression on the runways for the Spring 2014 collections.

I’m far from the fashionista that wears anything more high-end than from say, Free People or Macy’s at this time; but I do look forward to the day where fantasy and reality collide and I’d find myself in New York, in the audience right next to S.J.P. herself, rockin’ designer label everything…and not because I need to…but just because I can.

Fantasy complete.

Here are a few more Highlights from this week:

{Still buzzing from The Hollywood Bowl.}

Happy weekend!

The Big Picture: A Night at the Oscars

1-atg1

{A super excited selfie on the way to the Bowl!}

It doesn’t feel like an authentic L.A. summer until there’s a trip to the Hollywood Bowl. Not only is it a quintessential experience when living in the City of Angels, it also happens to be my favorite place in L.A. if I had to pick one.

This past Labor Day weekend found me right where I wanted to be: with my guy, a small picnic dinner, and seat at the Bowl ready for a night of movie music under the stars. The Big Picture: A Night at the Oscars was an enchanting extravaganza celebrating music from Academy Award winning films that magically echoed through the warm September night. Conductor David Newman and the immensely talented Hollywood Bowl Orchestra recreated soundtracks to some of Tinseltown’s most renowned stories masterfully playing the score over live picture projected on their new state of the art LCD screens. As clips from famous films such as To Kill A Mockingbird (1962), The Artist (2011), An American in Paris (1951), and The Wizard of Oz (1939) played on the large screens, I almost forgot that the accompanying live music was even happening! The synchronicity and the crisp, booming sound were so solidly fused with the visuals, you felt like you were just watching a movie as you would any other time.

What was particularly special about this night was the eclectic mix of films and genres the program chose to highlight. Instead of the very obvious choices you might expect on a night like this, films such as Bullitt (1968), Up (2009), and You Only Live Once (1937) were saluted. In fact, I admired that they didn’t focus merely on films that won the coveted Best Picture award, but films that won accolades from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in a variety of areas from film editing, to acting, to screenwriting.

1-atg

{Making our way up to the cheap seats…yet again.}

Unlike this time last year with an engaging Jason Alexander as host – there was a weakness in the show with this year’s selection. Mary McDonnell (the President’s wife who dies in Independence Day) was an odd choice. She was ever so gracious, but clearly reading from a teleprompter and just didn’t have that natural relaxed spirit you’d expect in hosting duties on a night like this. I’m not one to be too harsh in this situation, I can only imagine what it’s like getting on stage in front of an 18,000 seat amphitheater, but I was often taken out the evening festivities when she was on stage. She just wasn’t the right person for the gig unfortunately. This would be my biggest criticism of the evening (outside of some obnoxiously loud people behind us.)

1-atg2

Otherwise, the night was another huge success. This time I went homemade with a ham and cheese sandwich (sometimes a girl just needs one), good conversation, lots of people watching (you couldn’t ask for a better place to do this!), and a night dedicated to two of my greatest loves: movies and music.

If I’m still carrying anything with me as I write this, the evening inspired me to check out films that I haven’t ever seen before or want to watch again. I see a night curled up on the couch with The Wizard of Oz and some popcorn in my near future.

The Hollywood Bowl is located at 2301 North Highland Avenue in Hollywood. Their summer season ends this month.

Birchbox Review: August

2013-09-01 10.16.17

August’s Birchbox arrived just when I was in the mood to try something new! Clearly, all the right people over at Birchbox got the special “shout-out” from my post last month and did something about it! There wasn’t a pink lipstick, lipliner, lip gloss, lip stain or lip-anything in sight!

While I can’t say that this box was one of my favorites overall, it did introduce me to some great new beauty goodies to experiment with that I wouldn’t have otherwise had the opportunity to. I’m now even a fan of blue eyeliner! Here’s how August went…

{1.} Whish Coconut Milk Correcting Gel – I love the subtle smell of coconut – there’s something so soothing about it that grabs me every single time. Unfortunately, I’m not really buying what this particular product is selling. The Whish Coconut Milk Correcting Gel has all the elements for what would make an amazing product to a women of today: a great smell, a nice texture, anti-aging properties abound, natural and organic ingredient-infused, and helps with sun damage if that’s something that you struggle with. But I put this on my dry to at times combination oily skin type (depending on the day) and my face craved more moisture instantly. I found myself putting on my beloved Murad moisturizer because my skin felt so dry after using the correcting gel. This makes this a pass for me.

{2.}  uniqONE All In One Hair Treatment – My first thought after I made the first spritz onto my hair was “men’s cologne.” It has an unusual, but not altogether unpleasant scent. I don’t quite know how to describe it, but the smell just…works. The texture of this product, a creamy white liquid, was also a surprising change of pace. Its claim to fame is that all of your post-shampooing/conditioning needs are in this one bottle. Ten needs to be exact. Your leave in-treatment, detangler, frizz tamer, hydration helper, and heat styling protector among other factors is here. I have to say that I only used this product once, and I am a stickler for using a leave-in conditioning product anyway (so essentially, I doubled up when testing this product); but I have been enjoying the benefits of a rather good hair day as I write this very sentence. Perhaps the uniqONE hair treatment is on to something. I’d like to use it a few more times before I give a definitive answer, but the fact that I don’t hate it already speaks volumes. I’m just not sure at $17 a bottle, that it’s worth the hype when I’m already pretty happy with my hair care system. Stay tuned…

{3.}  Mally Beauty Evercolor Starlight Watercolor Eye Liner – Another first courtesy of Birchbox? Experimenting with a navy blue eyeliner. And this one from Mally, charmingly named “Sailor,” had me from the first swipe across my eyelid! The color is just the right amount of blue so it doesn’t come across as too much, making it appropriate for a little flair if you work in an office, but doesn’t overpower your look if you’re trying to keep things professional. The pencil glides on as smooth as any eyeliner I’ve ever used due to its extremely creamy texture. At $15 – it’s not overpriced with the added benefit of being both waterproof and long-lasting. I’ll be rockin’ blue eyelids for some time to come. A great product if you’re in the market for the right way to give your eyes a little pop!

{4.} Whish Deodorant Swipes with Hair Inhibitor – I’ll admit, I was skeptical about this one the minute I saw it in my box. I can dig the deodorant swipe aspect to this product, it might even be nice to have with you in your purse when you need a refresher after the gym – but a “hair inhibitor?” Common! Since I obviously can’t back-up this bold claim with the one sample provided, I’ll choose skepticism until proven otherwise. Either way, I really liked the scent of the swipe and didn’t personally feel the need to reach for my go-to gel deodorant after an hour like I thought I might. However, I’ll still to my $4 Secret brand gel deodorant and a razor when I want to “inhibit” under arm hair.

{5.}  (MALIN+GOETZ) vitamin e face moisturizer – My review of the Whish Coconut Milk Correcting Gel applies here minus the lovely coconut smell. This product just didn’t appeal to me at all. The scent was blah and I still felt the need to apply my Murad over this MALIN+GOETZ product for additional moisture, and at $45 full-sized this shouldn’t be the case. Case closed. Total pass here.

Looks like the eyeliner is the win for the month. The hair treatment – a close second. See you for September!

{Taking in a moment of beauty during the chaos of this week.}

I know I’ve been an awful blogger this week, but I have a good excuse…at least I think so.

Life has been pretty insane lately on my end and I’m just now catching my breath long enough to be able to sit down, focus, and write. It’s been really busy at work and while dealing with the day-to-day, I’ve also been working on this big project for the last 2 weeks that I wanted to get done right, but that also weighed on me quite heavily because of my rather “perfectionistic tendencies” (that’s a cool new term I just came up with at this exact moment!). Needless to say, it was such a huge relief to complete it and hit the “send” button yesterday to finally get it off my plate!

Now that I’ve fully recovered from my recent bout with the common cold and I’m trying to re-balance and catch-up on life stuff once again, I’ve been able to get to the all important things that I haven’t had (or in certain cases made) the time to get to…(like blogging). Then again it’s been so crazy that you should’ve seen my fridge not too long ago (pictured below), that’s how “off” I’ve been lately. After a much-needed trip to Trader Joe’s to stock up on groceries (yay, fresh produce!); finally deciding on my next book (that I know you’ll laugh at me about if I actually say what it is because it’s pretty trashy novel-esque – so I won’t for now!); along with finishing up that huge project and making a full recovery from my cold, it’s safe to say things are looking up!

I’m SO, SO, SO looking forward to the long holiday weekend! There’s still some more life stuff I need to catch-up on (like cleaning my bathroom, for one…hooray! NOT.) but Sunday evening cannot come any faster…but not too fast – I want to savor the weekend as long as possible. I’ll be at the Hollywood Bowl with my favorite person at my favorite place in all of L.A. I made a visit there this time last year, and had the time of my life. I’m sure this year will be even more magical. We’ll be celebrating a night of movies and music under the stars again with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and conductor, David Newman, but this time for The Big Picture: A Night at the Oscars.

I can’t wait to share how the evening goes with you next week and I promise you’ll hear from me more than once!

Until then, here are a few more highlights from a very busy week. See you soon! 🙂
